Sea Trust Wales

Who are Sea Trust Wales? Sea Trust Wales is a marine wildlife conservation charity based in Pembrokeshire. Their mission is to get local people taking care of their marine wildlife. Sea Trust are committed to: • Studying, raising awareness, and caring for local marine wildlife • Inspiring the public to care about their environment by opening their eyes to the stunning diversity of wildlife and habitats around the Welsh coast • Engaging with the public, resulting in positive changes in attitudes and behaviours towards the protection of marine wildlife Sea Trust were the first organisation in the UK to attempt porpoise photo-ID research. Five years on, this study is still going strong and continuously producing ground-breaking results. They are also the only organisation in Pembrokeshire to regularly perform marine mammal surveys year-round, from the shore or by boat. Sea Trust uses the results from these surveys to aid in the development of protective legislation for these animals and marine developments such as renewable energy. Other current work includes working with fishers and other scientists, reducing plastic fishing waste by testing the use of alternative materials and by introducing a free recycling scheme. Sea Trust raise awareness and engage with the community by involving local volunteers, sharing everything they learn and hosting educational events for schools, community groups and the public. They have the perfect place for it, thanks to their Aquarium at the Ocean Lab, Goodwick. The aquarium houses local species that emulate a variety of marine ecosystems, giving visitors a chance to glimpse life beneath the waves of the Irish Sea.
